The Incidental Daddy – Vintage Cars

The Incidental Daddy is completely spoilt for choice. What do I recommend you do on this glorious weekend in February 2011? With the inspiring Design Indaba to visit, the MK Awards to attend and Ireland’s Riverdance on at GrandWest, let alone all the fabulous exhibitions and markets, Cape Town is abuzz with wonder.

So I thought I’d focus my Incidentals on any of you wanting to get away from it all, and recommend a road trip to the Winelands. You see, the Incidental Daddy loves cars, old and new, practical and gimmicky, glitzy and glamorous, vintage and super-speedy, but mostly those with heaps of character that deserve special love and care. I found all of these and more during a visit to the Franschhoek Motor Museum on the L’Ormarins Estate outside Franschhoek.

This is home to the Rupert’s private collection of motor vehicles and we are so fortunate to have them available for viewing. There are nearly 1 000 vehicles in the collection, but the display only offers ±300 at a time, which means that they get rotated every few months. Perfect! The collection ranges from an 1898 Beeston motor tricycle to a Ferrari Enzo supercar, and takes us through the development of modern transport in style. There are more than 80 exhibits in four de-humidified halls and best of all they are presented in chronological order. Every car is in perfect working condition, and their speed range is from 50km/h to an astounding 355km/h.

Open on weekdays from 10h00 to 16h00, and on weekends from 10h00 to 15h00, there is no charge, and you can easily combine your visit with wine tasting and lunch in Franschhoek before heading back to the city, and the Grand Daddy hotel. Allow plenty of time to linger. If you can’t make it out but are a lover of all things car, have a play on their amazingly interactive website which has specs, pics, fun applications like “hear the car start” and downloadable ringtones.
