Charly’s Bakery: The Incidental Daddy

All the touring and visual stimulation in the city can build an appetite for special treats, and if special and treat are the key guidelines to what you’re looking for, there is only one place to be – the incredible Charly’s Bakery in Canterbury Street.

As with most great things, Charly’s Bakery started in a humble way when Charly, a 16-year-old boy, was looking for work in Namibia’s Swakopmund. He swept the floor, made puff pastry, and washed dishes under the stern eye of a German master baker until he was allowed to learn how to make cakes. Enter the bakery (stage left): A woman with long dark hair and, as they tell it at Charly’s, “a helluva cleavage” – and two beautiful daughters later the couple move to Cape Town!

Behind the counter: where the magic happens

Charly’s is a place of fairy tales. Whether yours is a wedding, birthday, anniversary or corporate function, this is the place that will create the masterpiece. Charly, Jacqui, Alex and Dani will listen, advise, and then deliver beyond your expectations. It sounds unlikely, but the cakes all taste as good as they look.

Cupcake heaven with a Mzansi flavour!

Whatever you do, find time to visit: The coffee is amazing, the quiche and pies incredible and the cupcakes decadent to the extreme. Actually the only negative is that you can’t have it all …

Charly's cakes are true works of art

Open Tuesday to Friday from 08h00 to 17h00 and Saturday from 08h30 to 15h00, Charly’s Bakery is sadly closed on Mondays and Sundays. If you need to, call them on +27 21 461 5181.
